About
“A sculptural alpine masterpiece of stone and timber, quietly positioned above a mountain creek.”
An exceptional example of Australian mid-century modern architecture, heritage listed Wombiana is one of Thredbo’s earliest chalets, designed in 1959 by renowned architect Peter Muller. Tucked discreetly within the heart of Thredbo Village, this remarkable lodge offers the rare balance of central convenience and genuine seclusion.
Constructed from locally sourced granite and hardwood, Wombiana sits quietly beside its own mountain creek, its distinctive sculptural form merging naturally with the landscape. Recent thoughtful restoration honours its architectural heritage, the chalet now blends glamourous mid-century design with warmth, comfort, and an unmistakable alpine atmosphere.
Inside, an expansive double-height living space with vaulted ceilings and walls of glazing opens onto a wraparound hardwood deck, framing unique views across the treetops and surrounding mountains. Rich timber detailing, natural textures, and curated interiors soften the bold architecture, creating a home that feels cosy and deeply inviting.
Setting the Scene
Positioned within Kosciuszko National Park, Thredbo is surrounded by dramatic alpine terrain of snow gums, rivers, granite outcrops, and ridgelines that transform beautifully through the seasons. With all the advantages of a central village location, Wombiana offers guests a unique opportunity to experience the retro glamour of a true mid-century modern alpine experience without compromise on comfort. Whether you are looking for a calm and cosy base to return to after an active mountain day or great place to catch up over a meal & cocktails, Wombiana delivers.
Cafés, restaurants, boutique shops, and ski lifts are all within walking distance, allowing guests to enjoy the ease of village life while returning to a setting that feels entirely separate and serene.
The Space
Wombiana unfolds across two thoughtfully arranged levels, designed to embrace both practicality and openness. An air-lock entry creates a welcome transition from the outdoors, particularly appreciated after a day on the snow.
The heart of the chalet is a soaring double-height lounge framed by vaulted ceilings and expansive double-glazed windows that flood the interior with natural light throughout the day. A gas fireplace anchors the room, creating a warm gathering place to unwind after mountain adventures.
A curated vinyl collection and bluetooth connected phonograph enhance the retro feel of the space and encourage social gatherings and evenings spent lingering by the fire. Smart 65” TV screen connected to key streaming services is available for those essential rest days.
The newly renovated kitchen is fully equipped with premium Smeg appliances and remains visually connected to the living and dining spaces, making cooking and entertaining feel effortless and social.
Three bedrooms, which are configured as 2 Queen size beds and 1 King size, which can also be split on request into two single beds, are thoughtfully distributed across both levels, each is paired with its own bathroom, providing privacy and flexibility for families, couples, or groups travelling together. Hydronic heating runs throughout the chalet, while heated bathroom floors ensure year-round comfort. Gas fireplace in the living area offers a cosy feel and immediate heat boost. Additional spaces include a dedicated drying room with racks for ski gear, a laundry, writing nook, and generous storage.
Outdoor Living
A wraparound hardwood deck extends from the main living space, offering an immersive connection to the alpine landscape. From here, the outlook shifts dramatically with the seasons, snow-covered treetops and crisp mountain air in winter, vibrant greenery and open landscapes in the warmer months.
The nearby creek provides a gentle natural soundtrack, enhancing the sense of retreat and reinforcing Wombiana’s unique connection to place.
Two private on-site parking spaces at the lodge entry make arrival easy, allowing convenient unloading and direct access to the chalet.
The Experience
Whether arriving for winter snow, hiking, or simply a restorative escape, Wombiana offers a calm, design-led base unlike anywhere else in Thredbo.
Mornings begin with mountain light filtering through timber-framed windows; evenings invite long dinners, records playing softly, and time spent by the fire or cocktails on the deck beneath the alpine sky.
While everything in the village remains close at hand, Wombiana retains a truly unique sense of quiet separation — a place where architecture, landscape, and atmosphere come together to create a deeply memorable alpine stay.
